Versatile Chelsea Star on Barcelona's Radar as La Liga Giants Struggle to Move on From Dani Alves
Barcelona have reportedly identified Chelsea man Cesar Azpilicueta as a possible solution to their ongoing problems at right-back.
The Spanish giants have also been linked with Arsenal's Hector Bellerin and Benjamin Henrichs of Bayer Leverkusen, but could swoop for former Marseille man Azpilicueta this summer, according to Sport.es.
Affectionately known as 'Dave' by his teammates and fans, the 27-year-old has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League since his arrival in England in 2012.
Initially purchased as a right-back, he has emerged as one of the most versatile stars in the division, and has looked solid as anything as part of a back three under Antonio Conte this season.
His performances have caught the attention of Barca, who see him as viable option to come and operate as the long term right-back at the Nou Camp.
Barca have struggled in that department this season after Dani Alves left the club to join Italian giants Juventus on a free transfer last summer, and could well test Chelsea's resolve.
Alves was considered the finest attacking right-back of his generation by many during his time as a Catalan, and has had a fantastic first season with the Old Lady, rubbing salt in the wounds of his former club - Luis Enrique has tried Javier Mascherano, Aleix Vidal, Sergi Roberto and Rafinha in the position, but to little success.
Azpilicueta has not yet commented on such speculation, but thinking logically, a move may be unlikely given Chelsea's genuine ability to challenge for silverware and the huge role they have given him within the first-team - it would certainly take a big offer from the Catalans to prize him away from London.
