Aron Johannsson joined Werder Bremen on a four-year contract in 2015.

U.S. international Aron Johannsson hopes to break into Werder Bremen's team next season but said he could leave if the club no longer want him.

Johannsson, 26, missed large parts of his first season at Bremen with a hip injury and has only made two starts this term, both of them coming under the club's former coach Viktor Skripnik.

His time on the pitch under Alexander Nouri has been limited, and he last came on as a substitute in the 3-0 win against RB Leipzig over two months ago. While Bremen climbed in the standings, and could still qualify for the Europa League, Johannsson has had to watch from either the bench or the stands.

"That's the coach's decision. The team played well, won loads of games. You don't need to change much," Johannsson told WerderStube, adding that a change of system also meant the club no longer play with a real attacker.

He said: "The coach made this decision, and has not lost in 11 consecutive matches. I only got a few chances this season. And when I played in our match at Augsburg, I wasted a huge chance and we lost."

Last month, Bremen sporting director Frank Baumann hinted that Johannsson no longer featured in the club's plans, and the striker has now said that his time at the Weserstadion could come to an end.

"My first goal is to stay at Bremen. I love this club, even though those were two very, very, very difficult years for me, I feel well here," he said, adding: "My dream is to play here."

But when asked about a potential move to the United States this summer and rumoured interest of a MLS club, Johannnsson said: "I also heard about this. But I will focus on Bremen until the end of the season. That's what I told my agent. And if Bremen do not want me to stay here after that, I'd have to leave Bremen."
