Barcelona Make Chelsea Star Their Number One Priority Following Fantastic Season With Blues
After only one season wit the Blues, Alonso might welcome a move to Barcelona in the hope of initiating his international career with Spain, what with the 2018 World Cup round the corner, according to The Sun.
The Spanish defender has previously had spells with Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland, and Real Madrid and cost £24m from Fiorentina. Barcelona will have to at least match this transfer fee if they are to prise him away from Stamford Bridge.
After being initially used as a bit part player, the full back turned wing back has been instrumental in Chelsea winning the title. Since changing to a 3-4-3 formation, Alonso and Victor Moses have been key components of the Chelsea team.
Alonso has managed to help Chelsea’s defence keep 15 clean sheets; he has also scored six goals and provided three assists. His ability to both attack and defend are qualities that all potential Barcelona defenders must have.
He would face strict competition from Jordi Alba who has been a stalwart at the club for a number of years now. Luis Enrique has touted Alonso to eventually become his replacement, but currently, Alonso would face stiff competition to get into the team.
Lucas Digne, who was brought in last summer has failed to meet the extremely high standards set by previous left backs at the club. Barcelona will be hoping that lightning doesn’t strike twice and Alonso will live up to the standards he set for himself at Chelsea.
