Barcelona midfield target Marco Verratti looks set to remain with Paris Saint-Germain despite rumours linking the Italian with a move away from the French capital.

The Catalan club were reportedly close to agreeing on a deal for the 24-year-old but now, according to Sport.es, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, chairman of PSG, has said that Verratti will remain in Paris for the foreseeable future.

The Ligue 1 club are looking to build a squad to challenge for the Champions League and see the Italian as one of the main components to construct around.

With Blaise Matuidi set to leave the club in the summer, keeping hold of Verratti will be of the highest priority to the hierarchy at the club.

Inter Milan and Juventus, as well as Barca, have expressed an interest in the midfielder and PSG could still struggle to keep hold of their star despite the claims that he will stay.

Italian national manager, Gianpiero Ventura, has previously stated that he believes Verratti needs a bigger challenge than the French side, adding further fuel to the rumours linking him with an exit.

Seen as the natural successor to Andres Iniesta, the Italian would be a marquee signing for the Blaugrana in a summer where they desperately need strengthening.

Verratti was the man of the match against the Catalan's in PSG's 4-0 win at the Parc des Prices, providing a sumptuous assist for Julian Draxler.

With the club set to lose the Ligue 1 title to Monaco, the upcoming summer window could be their most vital in recent memory. If they were to lose a star name, Unai Emery faces a difficult task to achieve success.
