Schalke ultras use choreo display to call UEFA mafia

Schalke ultras called UEFA "mafia" during a large-scale "choreo" celebration on the 20th anniversary of their 1997 UEFA Cup triumph.
On Saturday, during the club's last home match of the season, a 1-1 draw with Hamburg, Schalke ultras unfurled seven banners across all four stands of the Veltins Arena, including a 3D replica of the trophy which had the word "mafia" in place of UEFA.
The €119,991.45 choreo -- a co-ordinated display produced by fans in the ground that is particularly popular in Germany -- was paid in full by the club's ultras, who reconciled all costs for the display, with a total of €40,000 paid alone for the UEFA Cup replica.
"As we reject financial support from Schalke 04 or sponsorship by companies from principle, we are looking forward to donations from private individuals or fan clubs from the fan scene," they wrote on their official website.
"The amounts donated will be used solely to finance future choreos. The amount of donation is not relevant, but the gesture counts. Who would like to support future choreos financially, can gladly donate to the following account."

The game against Hamburg was also club legend Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's last appearance at the Veltins Arena after seven years, 174 Bundesliga games and 84 goals.
Huntelaar bid an emotional goodbye to his fans following the draw, and later said: "The whole week was very emotional, and on match day I had already used up all my tears."
The 33-year-old -- whose contract at Schalke expires in June -- has yet to announce where he will play next season.
Schalke supporters also thanked left-back Sead Kolasinac for his six years at the club. The 23-year-old can also leave on a free transfer, and has been strongly linked with Arsenal and Manchester City.
Following that result Schalke no longer have the chance to qualify for a European competition next season.
