Shakhtar Donetsk captain Darijo Srna has revealed the reason why he turned down Catalan giants Barcelona and signed a new deal with Shakhtar.

Ever since Dani Alves left Barca in the summer of 2016, Luis Enrique's side have been in the market for a reliable right-back. This led to contact with the Ukrainian side over a possible January transfer for Srna.

Srna has been at Shakhtar for 14 years, and said, via Goal that he had no intentions of leaving Ukraine.

"I want to finish my career at Shakhtar. And when the president told me that he offered me a new contract, I only thanked him in response. I agreed to any terms," he said.

"You probably know about the story with Barcelona, however, as I said, my heart is here. I’m happy at Shakhtar. After a 14-year spell with them, you do not consider yourself a part of the club, you become a member of the family."

In an era of football where all players seem to care about is money, Shakhtar look to have found themselves a rare player who values loyalty and love over larger pay packets.
