The 2014 World Cup had its fair share of big moments, none more so than Uruguay's Luis Suarez biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini in the group stages. The South American nation won the game 1-0 after the incident had taken place, Diego Godin scoring the winner.

It was the third time the Barcelona striker had committed the offence and he was duly banned by FIFA for four months. 

The suspension delayed his debut for the Blaugrana and it turns out the former Liverpool man also lost out on quite a lot of sponsorship money - €80k in total.

The ban given to Suarez is the longest ever issued by FIFA and he was also fined 100k Swiss Francs.

The Uruguayan's sponsorship losses were due to breaking agreements with Adidas, according to Dutch Newspaper NRC.

The German manufacturer said they supported the governing body's stance on Suarez and refused to include the player in any more of their World Cup marketing.

The company added: "We will again be reminding him of the high standards we expect from our players.

"We will discuss all aspects of our future partnership directly with Suarez and his team."

Suarez had a deal with Adidas from 2010 to 2014 and they took it upon themselves to take back 20% of the amount they would have paid him over the four years due to the "irreparable damage" he had done.

Of the €400k they were set to pay, they took €80k back, so including the FIFA fine, Suarez lost around £150k.

To most people, that's a lot of money, but a player of his stature probably earns far more in a week.
